BioShock

Pure and frakking simple you have to play this game. BioShock is easily the best game I have played in a long time.
For the the uninitiated, BioShock is a crazy story that takes place in an underwater city named Rapture along with all the crazy genetically altered psychos. Basically, (possible spoilers) you start out as the unnamed protagonist surviving a plane crash near a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean, upon entering said lighthouse the chaos ensues and you learn of all matter of plasmids (like throwing lightning or fire or a swarm of bees) and hacking of course, too. All this is just the means to the end of getting off the island alive.
Easily one of the most interesting interactions in the game is with the so called “protectors” a.k.a. the Big Daddys and the “gatherers” a.k.a. the Little Sisters. The Little Sisters go around collecting adam (which is what you collect to upgrade your skills) and have the Big Daddies there to protect them from the denizens of Rapture. Along with the little sisters there is the seemingly controversial choice of saving them (and thus returning them to non-zombie form for a lesser amount of Adam) or harvesting them (for maximum Adam, but killing them in the process). All in all the game is frakking amazing and you owe it to yourselves to go out and buy the game now.

Prince of Persia

Well, I’m finally getting around to posting about it, Prince of Persia Classic on Xbox Live Arcade. It’s frakking awesome. Pure and simple, this is the way that remakes and ports of retro games are supposed to be done, none of the crap that they (the devs) have been pushing out with the likes of Galaga, Frogger, etc… So at least there is hope that more devs will learn.
Anywho, I spent many a time playing the original on the olde Mac that we had. Heck, we still have the original instruction manual wherein at the bottom of page it has the prince running and jumping over spikes flip-book style. In any event, it’s definitely worth a purchase. I even purchased it without first doing the trial version of the game—which is rare—but that’s also based on the fact that all the signs pointed to the fact that they didn’t screw it up. Another thing is the little additions that they made, like running and jumping off a wall to a ledge above-and-behind you make the game experience that much smoother. All this boils down to the fact that if you have an Xbox 360 you need to go-now-and-buy-this-game-this-very-instant, spend the 800 MS points/10 bucks for it, you won’t regret it.

Crackdown DLC

The first two real packs of downloadable content are now out (and no, the 4 new skins don’t count). Go grab it now!
The first one up is the “Free-for-All” download pack. First off is the Keys to the City mode, which basically is a mode where you can run around the city and spawn any of the cars in the game, exploding barrels and you can turn on God mode and the like as well. And one thing with the mode is that Achievements and the leaderboards are turned off for obvious reasons.
The other pack is the really good one (though it costs 800 points). The “Getting Busy Bonus Pack” is the one with all the real goods. Three new vehicles (the buggy, advanced racer, and armored vehicle), street racing over live, and some new weapons and game types.
Anywho, that’s my little summary and if you want more check Here.

Wii!

Woohoo! I got a Wii! I got a Wii! I got a Wii!
Can you tell I’m happy?
See, it went down like this: I went in to Best Buy to pickup Guitar Hero 2 for the Xbox 360, but they didn’t have any. Next I went up the street and around the corner to GameStop—but alas—they did not have any either. So while I was there I hung around a bit since they hadn’t gotten their shipment in yet (waiting on a new UPS driver), and when they did get a shipment I was dissapointed that it didn’t have any Guitar Hero 2′s in it, however the manager mentioned that it had about six Wii’s in there, I instantly said “I’ll take one!”
Along with the Wii, I picked up Sonic and the Secret Rings. I’ve only had it a few hours, but once you get used to controls it’s actually a pretty good game. More to follow in the near future of course. ;-)
Anywho, if you don’t have a Wii yet, keep heart and you too will soon have one like I do.
And yes, I still plan on getting Guitar Hero II for the 360.

Viva Piñata

Back when I picked up Virtua Tennis 3 I also picked up Viva Piñata, so here’s a mini-review.
For those who don’t know, Viva Piñata is a game where you build up your garden to attract new piñata to come and visit, complete a certain set of goals and then they become “residents” and stay in the garden. In a way it’s kinda like Pokémon, except instead of having to attack and capture new creatures, you attract them to your garden to become residents and then build them a house and then they “mate”. You mate your piñata by running through a little mini game by guiding your creature through a maze to its mate, and then poof, along comes an egg, it hatches and you’ve got a new piñata to play with.
So far it’s been fun messing around with it, the bad guys are annoying, but it’s a game, you have to have something annoying in it for a challenge, right? Anyways, if your having reservations about buying it (which I suggest you do, go buy it), then you can download a demo on the Xbox Live Marketplace now, Hell, I did before I bought the game.

Virtua Tennis 3

Well, I finally got around to picking up Virtua Tennis 3. It’s insanely good, pure and simple. Since I picked it up I’ve been playing it pretty much non-stop. Back when the Dreamcast was all the rage, my brother and I got Virtua Tennis after only playing the dinky little demo included on a demo disc with the Official Dreamcast Magazine once. And then we proceeded to play the heck out of it. And then in 2002 they released the updated Virtua Sega Sports Tennis 2k2, and I pretty much played it non-stop for a while, until new games/systems came along and I moved on. And now Virtua Tennis is back in full effect! It’s great. The graphics are gorgeous, the loading tolerably-quick, and most importantly the awesome gameplay that has made the series great is intact. And finally, since I only have a 360 and not a PS3 (e.g. blu-ray player that plays games as a bonus), I got the 360 version, which is actually the better of the two from what I’ve read in reviews, seeings how it is the only one with online play. I haven’t actually tried it yet (nor the spectator mode, VT.TV), but I suspect that I will sooner rather than later, and proceed to get my ass handed to me by a 12-year old.

Crackdown

Hot damn, this game is fun! Sure I played the demo already (in fact I have yet to delete it), but the full version is a million times better. I’ve only had it a few days but I’m already to the Shai-Gen (the most advanced of the 3 gangs). But Honestly it’s a lot of fun to run around the world just jumping from building to building and throwing crud around the world. And once you upgrade your driving skills the Agency vehicles get a huge bump in every way. One place this game definitely excels is with the achievements, not only are there a lot of them, but they are well integrated in the overall experience of the game. So in a lot of ways Crackdown raises the bar for future games not only in terms of achievements but also with the multiplayer co-op over Xbox Live. Go out and pick it up already!

Merry Christmas!

I figured I should probably post something quick before the end of the day. I’ve been meaning to post for the past week or so, but keep neglecting to do so.
So I got The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Gamecube and have been playing it a lot lately. And finishing out my season in Smackdown, I’ve beaten the first half (got to the credits), and now I’m going thru the second half, too. As for the other game I have out from gamefly—Tony Hawk’s Project 8, I’ve been playing off and on at that as well, and if you check out my profile on Xbox.com, you’ll see I’ve been unlocking a bunch of the achievements in that, too.
Anyways, I got a remote start for my car for Christmas. It’s nice, we’ll see how nice it really is starting tomorrow when I go back to work. But I guess since my car is from Chevrolet/GM that it’s gonna act a little funky due to the security system inside. Basically I have to stop it and the start the car normally before I get going or else the car will stall out and the engine lights would stay on, funky stuff.
Oh, I also got my copy of Little Miss Sunshine finally. If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and go get it. It’s great, and the commentary tracks are actually informative and full of behind-the-scenes information.
One last thing is that I’ve been doing my part lately to support the independent Mac Developer lately. I recently registered VoodoPad and FlySketch, and BetterZip with the great MacSanta promotion, All excellent programs well worth the cost.
Anywho, Merry Christmas everyone.

New Games

So I haven’t posted in a while, what with work and some new games I seem to have neglected to set aside anytime to post for all my voyeurs.
So I have yet to get a Wii, sadly, but recently got both Rainbow 6 Vegas and Smackdown Vs Raw 2007 for my 360. One’s freakin’ awesome, the other is good but has problems.
First the good. Rainbow 6 Vegas is a blast in both single and multiplayer. And everything you’ve heard (or maybe haven’t) about the graphics being insanely cool is true. It’s a very good looking game, and plays as good as it looks. Now I realize I’ve kinda said the same thing twice over now but it deserves to be said as such. Multiplayer is well thought out and implemented. While playing Co-Op over Xbox Live I didn’t really have any lag, but when I was trying to versus the game were usually around 10-14 people and they got really laggy, not so fun.
As far as Smackdown goes, they did a pretty good job with their first next-gen effort. But as with pretty much every game that they’ve done since the original Smackdown on the PS1, all of Yuke’s games have had absolutely abysmal load times. It’s sad really, that an otherwise great game is hampered by constant loading. Hell, after each wrestler’s intro it has to load another 5-10 seconds, then again before the match begins. And finally once the match is over, it goes to another loading screen before it shows the wrestlers celebrating. Maybe, just maybe next years game will cut back further on the loading time, but I’m not holding my breath.
Lastly I also got the Rambaldi Box-set of all five seasons of Alias. Today I finally got started with season 5. It’s kinda weird watching it as season 5 wasn’t on that terribly long ago, and I still kinda remember various bits and pieces of the episodes more-so than any of the other seasons. But it’s great to have all the seasons right there at your fingertips because the storyline for the series is pretty serial so you need to see them all to get the whole picture. And if you haven’t ever seen Alias, now is the perfect time to get ‘em all.

Weekend Update

Well, I’ve been randomly using some of my 40+ hours of PDP time-off from work lately and stopped up at Gamestop for no particular reason– well, actually because I wanted to see when they were going to be getting Gears of War in so I could take the day (or more likely, part of it) off. And while over there I broke down and picked up F.E.A.R. for the 360, and put down $50 (out of 199) on the HD-DVD player add-on for the 360. Too many good games coming out this month dagnabit, not to mention the Wii!
As far as FEAR goes though, it’s a really good game. It basically is Condemned crossed with Unreal or Quake, in other words, really crazy-scary-cool stuff. :)
Tuesday/Wednesday here I come. We got Gears coming, the HD-DVD player, and all the stuff I already have.
And randomly coming into my head at the moment is that I got the VGA cable for the 360 — And although it doesn’t support the full native resolution of my widescreen lcd @ 1440×900, it can get awfully close and still look great. Anywho, I’m just rambling now…
